So I said my blog would become a little more personal than it was before and this post is the first step! I’ve been on a journey this year to find myself and discover what I really want out of life. In this post I share five questions I’ve asked myself and keep asking myself to make sure I’m on the right track to living my best possible life. These questions also give you a lot of insight into who you really are and what really matters to you.
1. Does it give me joy?
This seems like an obvious question, but most people make choices based on many other things, such as financial security, safety or stability. Very rarely do I meet people who do everything because it makes them happy and gives them joy. It can drive me crazy to see how many people live their lives based on how they feel they’re supposed to live and not on what truly makes them happy. The question of what gives me joy really guides my life – from what I eat during the day, to what I want to do on weekends, what workout I’m going to do or to what job I want to have. As long as it gives me true joy, it must be the right choice. No question!
2. Will it still matter a year from now?
Most people, me included, worry endlessly about a lot of insignificant things, like the weather, traffic, bills, or deadlines at work. Of course worrying is human, but I feel it can really distract us from living out best lives. I’m talking about myself here – I am a champion at worrying over nothing. It makes my life a whole lot less fun and when the worrying’s over, I always realise how useless it was. That’s why I always ask myself: will it matter a year from now? Most of the time the answer is ‘no’ and that means I need to tone done the worrying. It doesn’t help the situation and it doesn’t do me any good.
3. Am I being true to who I want to become?
It’s so easy to make life choices based on who you or other people think you should be. You can spend years following a certain path in life before realising it’s in conflict with who you really are and want to become. I always like to think about my ‘future self’; what qualities I’d like to have, what strengths, who I’d really like to be and the ways I can improve. I want to worry less, have less fear of the unknown and take more risks. If I make a decision – no matter what about – and it’s not in line with my adventurous, risky, amazing future self, I really think hard about whether or not it’s the right choice for me. Change is painful and it’s uncomfortable and that’s all right. I’ve made a conscious decision to go where the discomfort is – that’s how you learn and grow as a person. If it’s too comfortable, it’s not for me.
4. Is it inspiring?
The best people are the people who inspire and make you feel good about yourself. The same is true for everything else in life: an education, a career choice, a new home, a holiday… If you’re not inspired, why do it? If you spend every day of your life doing the exact same thing, you will get very bored (I know I will anyway). I need to be prodded, tickled, pushed and turned upside down as much as possible. In my opinion, inspiration comes after discomfort but it’s very closely linked. Go where the feeling is good – and don’t look back.
5. Will it improve my life?
This is the most important question of all. If I can say one thing about my life so far, it’s that I’m always moving forward. I can look back and be proud of how far I’ve come. And I’m still moving! With every decision I make, I ask myself if it will make my life better, worse or if it will leave my life unchanged. Decisions can also temporarily make your life a little less fun, but in the long run greatly improve it (hello sacrifice!) and this is always in the back of my mind. I like the fact that I’m always moving forward and looking ahead and I don’t ever want to stop. So if it won’t make my life better, I don’t do it. And neither should you!
