It is the perfect weather for a cup of hot chocolate. Not the instant, dairy, sugary kind, but the home-made vegan kind made with raw cacao powder; which is also much healthier.
Is cacao powder vegan? This is a question I often get asked. Luckily, raw cacao powder is entirely vegan and it gives your health a real boost. In its pure form, cacao has many health benefits and is good for your heart, as it lowers your blood pressure, and has beneficial effects on the brain1, 2, 3. I love adding cacao powder to my smoothie or yoghurt in the morning but I also love to make hot chocolate with it. The smell alone is heavenly. To give it a little kick, I like to add some whipped cream which I make using canned coconut milk. It works best if you put the can in the fridge for a few hours (or overnight) so it becomes nice and solid. All you need to do is whisk it with a hand mixer until it resembles whipped cream. You can add a (small!) splash of water if it’s too solid but be careful – adding too much will make the mixture too thin. Don’t worry if you’re not a fan of coconut milk, this hot chocolate is already delicious on its own! I love hot chocolate on a cold, Monday afternoon or a lazy Sunday. It’s a great winter drink but you can also serve it cold in the summer. Enjoy!
