…and my first beach day of 2016! Like most people after a long, dark winter I am seriously sunshine-deprived and was sooo looking forward to the first warm, sunny day of the year.
And I wasn’t the only one; everyone in the Netherlands was excitedly looking forward to the weekend last week, as it was announced the temperature would be – wait for it – 20 degrees Celsius! That means, off to the beach! Luckily, the Netherlands has a lot of beaches and since the country is so small, you never really have to travel far. My younger sister happens to live in The Hague, a seaside city, so that’s where I headed last Sunday.
Another cool Dutch thing is the growing passion for plantbased, vegan food. We have a vegetarian butcher who produces vegetarian and vegan food and is so popular that its products even go overseas. We also have an increasing number of vegan restaurants (which I’m so excited about!) and vegan menu options. One of those is the Dutch Weed Burger (yes – capital letters required). And no, this awesome vegan burger is not made with weed but with seaweed. Even the bun is made with seaweed and is green (how cool is that?), while the burger itself is made with soy and a Dutch type of seaweed. The burger also has a creamy sauce, entirely vegan and super yummy. They don’t serve this burger everywhere, but they do in The Hague! While I was on the train and on my way to the Hague I quickly checked which restaurants served the burger and one happened to be situated right on the beach – SummerTime!
I had a great, sunny day – I even got a slight sunburn (first of the year, woohoo!) and I enjoyed a delicious lunch at SummerTime: the Dutch Weed Burger. It’s such a good burger; you can definitely taste the seaweed, which I love, and it’s served with thick, greasy fries (yummy). Definitely worth the trip! If you’re ever in the Netherlands and would like a good vegan burger, you can find more information here: dutchweedburger.com. By the way: this is not a sponsored post. I just love this burger and as a proud Dutchie, I want to spread the word!
