Things I love

My top five instant sources of inspiration

We all have days when we’re feeling uninspired and a little down. In this blogpost I share five of my instant inspiration boosters, which always get me back up. Whether it’s a song, part of a movie or a piece of text, these always do the trick of making me feel inspired again.

1. The Pursuit of Happyness Trailer (2006)

Note: watch the trailer, not the entire movie, if you want instant inspiration. I LOVE the trailer to the Pursuit of Happyness movie. I also love the movie, but the trailer is the perfect combination of inspirational one-liners and upbeat music to instantly lift my mood. WHAT am I complaining about, this man took an UNPAID internship while raising his son in a public bathroom! Watching this always gives me goosebumps, that’s how great it is. The best part, of course, is that it’s a true story and at the end of the movie as well as the trailer, the real Chis Gardner and actor Will Smith cross paths on-screen. It doesn’t get much better than this, trailer-wise. You can watch the trailer below.

Best line:

“You got a dream, you got to protect it. People can’t do something themselves, they want to tell you, you can’t do it. You want something, go get it. Period” – Will Smith, aka Chris Gardner, to his son

2. Helicopter scene from Meet Joe Black (1998)

I know I probably love this scene so much because I have major daddy issues, but I don’t care. I absolutely love this scene and have shared the lines throughout my life on my Facebook wall, in my diary, on Instagram and by shoving my laptop in random people’s faces with the scene on replay. I love the way Anthony Hopkins portrays a father’s concern for his daughter’s lack of happiness and his want for her to find real, obsessive love. It always gives me the shivers. I think this scene doesn’t just apply to finding a great love, but to living life itself. About how most of us sleepwalk through life, while we should pull out all the stops and live life in an obsessive, crazy way, doing everything we love. You can watch the scene here:

Best line:

“Because the truth is honey, there’s no sense living your life without this. To make the journey and not fall deeply in love. Well, you haven’t lived a life at all. But you have to try. Because if you haven’t tried, you haven’t lived”
Anthony Hopkins, aka William Parrish

3. The song Soar by Christina Aguilera

Funnily, this song also happens to be part of the trailer of The Pursuit of Happyness (see how right they got it?!) and I’ve loved it for years. I used to listen to everything Christina when I was about 14-15 years old and those songs are still in all my playlists. I can’t get enough, especially of this song. No matter how often I’ve listened to it, I keep discovering new lines that I hadn’t noticed before, or that suddenly become meaningful. The song is SO right and SO true, that it can still bring tears to my eyes. It’s the most inspirational song I’ve ever heard. This is my favourite part:

“What is it is that makes us feel the need
To keep pretending
Gotta let ourselves be

Don’t be scared
To fly alone
Find a path that is your own”

You can listen to the whole song here:

4. First 5 minutes of ‘The Secret’ movie (2006)

I know you may be tired of The Secret or The Law of Attraction and sometimes I am too, but I still secretly love the movie. I love all the inspirational people in it and all the on-screen quotes coupled with dramatic music. It makes me feel like I really can do or be anything I want! I have the movie on my computer and whenever I need a boost of inspiration or positive energy I watch the first 5 minutes of the movie. That’s enough to lift me out of a bad mood. Also, I am a huge fan of Bob Proctor who is a prominent speaker in The Secret. Everything he says is massively inspirational, so I like to listen to him speak whenever I can.

You can watch the first 20 minutes of The Secret movie here:

Best part:

“Everything that’s comes into your life you are attracting into your life. And it’s attracted to you by virtue of the images you’re holding in your mind. It’s what you’re thinking. You see, whatever is going on in your mind you are attracting to you” – Bob Proctor

5. Desiderata poem (1927)

This is by far the most inspirational poem I have ever read. The words never fail to make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. The poem was written by the American writer Max Ehrmann and it’s basically a poem about life and how best to live it. I first read this poem at my boyfriend’s parents’ house, where his father had hung it up on the wall. I read the first few lines and I was hooked. I have seriously considered tattooing part of it on my body, that’s how much I love it. Here are my favorite parts from the poem:

“Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness”

“And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy”

You can read the whole poem here.

I hope this post has inspired you a little bit too. I know my sources of inspiration aren’t majorly special or literary, but they don’t need to be. They make me feel happy, inspired and energized. Please share your most inspiring songs, movie parts or poems in the comments, I would love to hear them!
