Things I love

10 x the nicest compliments I ever received

Although I love to focus on my faults and ways I could improve, I also like to spend some time dwelling on everything I do right. Julia Roberts told Richard Gere in Pretty Woman that ‘the bad stuff is easier to believe’ and sadly that’s true. Some positive stuff also sticks though. Here are the 10 nicest compliments I ever received.

1. You’re strong

It took me a while to see it, but I am pretty strong. I can take much more than I thought I could and some days I even feel invincible. Someone once told me I’m one of the strongest people they ever met and I felt so incredibly proud when I heard that. I would never want to be considered ‘weak’ or someone with an avoidant personality. I face conflict head on and I deal with it pretty well – most of the time.

2. I wish I was as smart as you

A few years ago I was involved in a large cyber-bullying study and I was collecting data at a high school somewhere in Holland. I was in a classroom handing out questionnaires when a young girl started talking to me and asking me questions. She asked me how old I was, whether I went to university and what I was studying. I told her and she just stared at me and said: “I wish I was as smart as you”. This is still one of the nicest compliments I ever got, especially since I never really thought of myself as smart until that day.

3. I’ve tried your recipes and love them

Last week a colleague who I only just met came to my office to ask me something work-related. Just before she left she told me she had not only visited my blog but made two (!) of my recipes and loved them. I can’t tell you how happy it makes me to hear that, especially from someone I hardly even know. It’s really, really cool.

4. You always make me feel better

I love knowing I’ve helped someone or made them feel better. This compliment was given to me by my younger sister and it’s such a rewarding thing to hear. As an older sister I always feel responsible for my younger siblings and when they’re a bit down or unhappy I want to make sure they’re okay. Sometimes all I do is listen and sometimes I give them some advice, which I always hope will help them in some way. I don’t pretend to have all the answers but I do want to be there for them as much as I can. When they tell them I’ve made them feel better I feel like I’ve ‘done my job’ right.

5. You’re kind

I wasn’t always kind. I used to be annoying, judgmental, self-centered and unhappy, which was the root cause of it all. I’ve come to realize how important kindness is, not just to the people close to you but also strangers. It makes you feel a lot better about yourself and perhaps you’ve made someone else’s day a little brighter. When someone tells me I’m kind I take it as a huge compliment. If anything, I want to be seen as a kind person.

6. You always have your shit together

One thing I always knew I wanted: to be financially independent and have my shit together. And I think I have succeeded. I’m not done, but so far I’m doing pretty well. I always pay my bills on time and I make sure I am able to do the things I want to do. People tell me all the time that I really have my shit together and they admire me for it. I love hearing this because it’s the one thing I always knew I wanted.

7. I love your blog

I’ll never tire of hearing people tell me they love my blog, or reading positive comments about my blogposts. I write for an audience, I don’t write for myself, so when I hear from people that they love reading my posts I know my hard work is not for nothing.

8. You’re so funny

How funny I am really depends on who I’m with. I’m not funny with everyone. But I love it when people tell me they think I’m funny – it makes me like them a lot more. Not because I’m so self-centered, but because a humor-match is so important to me. Being able to laugh together is the best basis for any friendship or relationship. By the way: this compliment was given to me by my boyfriend, which makes it invaluable to me.

9. You’re super chill

This compliment needs to be put into context a little. This is something a lot of guys (or men) have told me who, for some reason, have a twisted view of women. They see women as whiny, annoying people who aren’t much fun to be with. Numerous men have told me they can’t believe how ‘chill’ I am, compared to their views on how women really are. I do like that I am not a ‘whiny woman’ but I still don’t believe the majority of women are that way. I think most of us are pretty chill already.

10. You light up a room

One of the biggest compliments I ever got was in high school when I asked people to sign my yearbook. My senior year of high school was one of my best years because I went to a new school and met lots of new people. It was an amazing year and a huge growing year for me too. When the year came to an end and I asked people to sign my yearbook most of them wrote about how I was always smiling and lit up a room. People still tell me that today, but I have been through some hard times the past few years which have made my smile fade a little. Whenever I’m feeling down I like to read those yearbook comments and remember how carefree and happy I was back then. Thank you all for your comments – they still mean the world to me!

This is a lovely idea. Hall encourage my girlfriends to do this themselves when having a bad day. We should all focus on the positives a lot more. Great post! 🙂
