Hi and thanks for visiting my blog! My name is Emmelyn, I am 32 years old and I live in the Netherlands. I first started blogging in 2015 and back then I thought my blogging journey would be about healthy food and living. But what I soon realized is that I have so many different interests and there’s so much more I want to blog about – why limit myself to food and health related topics? That’s why, in 2016, I decided to start my own personal website, under my own name. This way, I can write about anything I want without sticking to one specific topic.

In this blog I combine my two passions: science and writing. After graduating from the University of Amsterdam in early 2013, I went on to pursue a PhD in communication science. In March 2018 I successfully defended my PhD in front of my family, friends and colleagues – literally one of the best days of my life. Since then, I have continued to work in the field, doing research on how people initiate and form friendships online and offline, with humans and machines (chatbots). I also study the effects of social media influencers (bloggers, vloggers) on young people’s daily lives.

I love my job, but I also love the freedom of creative writing; something I don’t get to do as much anymore. Writing a scientific article is a very structured process, which leaves little room for creativity. I have always loved to write which is why, earlier this year, I started sharing some of my poetry on a separate Instagram account (@emmelynpoetry). On my personal Instagram (@emmelyncroes) I share photos of my life and vegan food – my other passion. On this blog you will find a separate section with my favorite plant-based recipes.

This blog is a way for me to return to my true self and doing what I really love to do. I am an Assistant Professor at a university and I blog next to my full-time job about my research and any other topics that may interest me. As much as I love creative writing – I am a researcher at heart. Blogging has been a true joy for me and I hope you enjoy reading my blogposts as much as I enjoy writing them.
